Interview with John Saul (Belleveu, Washington / USA)

Hi John Saul, thank's that you have taking the time to answer a few questions of Elements of Crime.
You have studied at various universities, including theater arts and literature. Why did you have not a degree?
I just didn’t play the Higher Education game. I focused on what I was interested in, but left many other subjects in the lurch. And at some of my colleges I was a little bit of a political rabble rouser.
The total number of copies of your books is more than 25 million. You have achieved everything, how did you motivate to write further. Is the writing the fulfillment for you?
As many other authors, it’s having written that is fullfilling. I never set out to write the Great American Novel. I set out to have a career as a writer and that’s satisfying enough. It’s also satisfying to know I’m entertaining a lot of people.
How do you get the ideas for your books?
Where do they come from? I'm the last to know. Out of a nightmare? Out of the air? Out of the news?
Do you have a favorite book of which you've written? Will you be better with every book?
My fave is Manhattan Hunt Club. I’m not the one to judge if one book is “better” or “worse” than another.
I would like an idea of your work routine. Do you write more in the morning or evening? How many hours? You count words or pages?
It depends on where I am. If I’m not in Hawaii I can procrastinate and I’ll wind up writing in the afternoon. If I’m in Hawaii I want to write early and then get out on the links.
Give it a good piece of advice that you can give beginners?
The best advice I have is write and then write some more. It’s amazing how many people write one thing and if no one likes it they give up.
What are the advantages if you're a bestselling author, and what are the drawbacks?
Advantages: You always get published. You have a team helping you. Disadvantages: You have to perform all the time and you have to give them the same type of story, only better and different. Figure that one out!
Please can you give us a little preview of your latest work? When we can expect a new Thriiler in Germany, and what kind of story it will be?
In Germany, House of Reckoning should just be about ready to come out. I never talk about anything I am working on.
